In Roman times, the Iberian peninsula, including current-day Spain, was called Hispania. Spain, located in the south of Europe, is a sunny, beautiful country, its people are passionate and proud, which is also reflected in their music. We will hear excerpts from the famous violin concerto of one of their most renown composers, Édouard Lalo (1823-1892). The piece will be played by a very talented and hard-working young solo violinist. French composer Georges Bizet's (1838-1875) most famous work, Carmen, is set in Spain.

A kaleidoscope is a traditional toy: a short tube with mirrors inside: when you look inside and turn it, you can see beautiful, colourful patterns that change moment by moment. The program for our concert is, just like a kaleidoscope, a variety of short, beautiful pieces. We start with the music of a ceremony of a long-lived English king, then we will "see" little swans and little chicks through music, we will rejoice together in the spring sunshine, and in the end, we can sing along with the orchestra.

RESPECT FOR TRADITION - Beethoven / Prokofjev - Alexander Malofejev, Gábor Takács-Nagy E/6. Buy tickets

Gábor Takács-Nagy rose to fame as a violinist and as the founder of the world-class string quartet that bears his name. He is currently a professor of chamber music and conducting in Switzerland, and he is actively conducting. His ars poetics as a conductor is to bring classical pieces to life in the way they were presumably performed in the composer's time. Driven by this aspiration, he has recently recorded all of Beethoven's symphonies. In this concert, he will pay tribute to the immortal master with two of his works.

SERENADE EVENING - Dvořák, Róbert Farkas F/3. Sold out
13 Event

Antonin Dvořák (1841-1904), like several other composers (e.g. Brahms), opened his series of orchestral pieces with lighter works, serenades. The first of his two early serenades was for string orchestra, following the example of Mozart's early serenades. In the second, he only uses wind instruments and lower-pitched string instruments, and in this piece, he anticipates later Slavonic dances.

WE CELEBRATE THE MASTER OF THE CELLO: MIKLÓS PERÉNYI - Vivaldi / Kodály / Erkel / Elgar L/6. Buy tickets
13 Event

Miklós Perényi, who just recently celebrated his 75th birthday, holds a prominent place among the world-famous and highly esteemed instrumentalists of our time. He has cultivated a close friendship with the MÁV Symphony Orchestra for decades, which is why he will be honoured with a special concert, where he will be making his debut as a chamber musician and even as a teacher, for he will be performing Vivaldi's double concerto with one of his students.

PEAKS - Grieg / Britten / Bartók - Béla Bánfalvi F/4. Buy tickets
13 Event

The program presents three of the highest peaks of the string orchestra literature (hence the title of the concert). Grieg speaks the musical language of the 19th century, Britten and Bartók of the 20th. Grieg's work evokes the style and mood of an era long passed, while Britten dresses his own childhood genius in 'adult clothes’; his work is sweet and joyful. Bartók's Divertimento (although the title means 'entertainment') is a heartbreaking testament of the greatest tragedy of the 20th century, the outbreak of the Second World War.
